Below: how roe deer, fallow deer and wild boar are hunted with a bow, the equipment, and the rules to know.

Roe deer with a bow

A bow brings the shot to a few tens of metres, and roe deer see, hear and scent very well, so the approach is what decides the hunt. Most outings alternate slow stalking along woodland edges and clearings with waiting on a high seat over a feeding area, chosen to suit the wind, the light and what the animals are doing that day.

On a guided trip the outing is led by someone who knows the territory and its cull plan, and the animal to take is assigned by sex and class. Early summer and the weeks before the rut, when bucks are most territorial, are often the best times; the exact dates are the ones each trip shows.

Fallow deer and wild boar with a bow

Fallow deer live in herds, so a bow hunter works the edges of feeding areas from cover until a single animal offers a close, clear shot. Wild boar are hunted with a bow mostly from a high seat or a ground blind at first and last light; their sense of smell is exceptional, so the stand is chosen by the wind.

Equipment

You need a bow suited to big game, arrows matched to it and sharp hunting broadheads, tested together before you travel. Practise at real distances and from a raised position too, because shooting from a high seat changes the angle. A rangefinder, quiet clothing and scent control matter more than any accessory.

Regions set minimum requirements for bows and arrows. The outfitter confirms the ones that apply in its area, and each trip's "What to Bring" list sets out the personal equipment expected.

Rules and documents

In Italy, hunting with a bow is permitted by national law, and the regions set how and when it may be practised; for deer and wild boar it is generally part of selective hunting. Every trip shows the hunting period of its territory and the documents the outfitter requires, such as a hunting licence and insurance.
