If the wild boar is the king of the woods, the roe deer may be considered the prince of the Maremman forests. Present in strong numbers across these territories, it is an elegant, alert and elusive animal, moving discreetly between woodland, clearings and open fields. It is the smallest deer species found in Italy.
In particularly rich environments, it can reach up to 32 kg, while adult specimens in the Maremma generally weigh between 20 and 28 kg. Its modest size should not be underestimated: excellent eyesight and highly developed senses make the roe deer a challenging quarry, requiring patience, precision and a careful understanding of the terrain. During the reproductive season, its behaviour becomes even more remarkable.
Dominant males actively defend their territories and may confront younger animals in order to maintain control of the area. Observing these natural dynamics adds a distinctive and memorable dimension to the hunting experience. Roe deer hunting is strictly regulated according to gender and age class, in accordance with the reproductive cycles of the species.
For this reason, the guide assists the hunter not only during the approach, but also in correctly identifying and selecting the appropriate animal to harvest.
